Glass blowing is intense and physically exhausting, as well as being beautiful and familiar. It reminds me of restaurant kitchen culture with its refined attentiveness and coordinated actions in the midst of things that are hot and sharp. Though the stakes are far higher with glass blowing. It has always been a secret fantasy of mine to participate in making something blown from glass. Maybe this is everyone’s fantasy. It was exciting to have these three skilled artisans slog through the strange technical requirements of this project. I felt neurotically guilty watching their frustrated attempts to figure out how to translate my design into the choreography of the techne. Things almost finished and breaking. Done again. Almost finished, breaking. Repeat, etc.
This was one of the early test models to see how all the various component parts would come together.
