2009

The structure you see here was grown from the fungus Ganoderma lucidum (also known as Reishi or Ling-chi) at the Far West Fungi mushroom farm in Monterey, California. It is currently on view at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf as part of their Eat Art exhibit.

Mycotectural Alpha is a test structure that is part of a larger project in which I will be growing an entire building out of fungal material. My goal is to create a space that can shelter 12-20 people at a time. Over the next few years I will continue growing experiments to determine the fungi's material qualities as well as means of propagating more complex forms.

Click on More Images and Process to learn how this structure was made.

And click on PURE CULTURE in the ART menu to see some other fungal structures I have grown.

The building will slowly be boiled down in the form of a tea over the course of the exhibit and served to the visitors of the museum. A very literal tea house.
